My Patient Approach
A **family-centred approach** is essential when treating children. A consultation does not involve one patient — it involves an entire family: an anxious mother, a father, siblings. Listening to each person's questions individually and explaining why a particular procedure is necessary are the first steps in making the process manageable.
Surgical decisions are planned, wherever possible, **according to the child's age and developmental stage**. While early intervention is necessary for certain pathologies (such as obstructive anomalies), the most appropriate age window is observed for elective cases.
Bringing European-standard paediatric surgical practice to this department is a goal I hold closely. My observer period in Basel demonstrated how critical adherence to international protocols is in neonatal and infant surgery — and we maintain that same rigour in our clinical practice here.
